Common Questions

At As You Are Counseling Services, we understand that starting therapy can feel like a big step — and it often comes with a lot of questions. Our goal is to make the process simple, transparent, and comfortable from the very beginning.

Whether you’re curious about how sessions work, what to expect at your first appointment, or how our sliding-scale options are handled, we’re here to help. We believe that informed clients feel more confident and supported in their care, and we want you to feel that same sense of ease when choosing AYA.

If you don’t see your question listed here, please reach out. We’re always happy to talk through what you need and help you take the next step toward your wellness journey.

DO YOU OFFER SLIDING SCALE RATES?

We believe that therapy is an investment in your emotional and psychological well-being. Our licensed therapists offer sessions at $150 for 60 minutes, while our pre-licensed therapists offer sessions at a reduced rate of $125.

We understand that therapy is a financial commitment, and we never want cost to be the only barrier to receiving support. For that reason, we reserve a limited number of sliding-scale openings for clients experiencing financial hardship. These spots are offered based on income eligibility and current availability.

If you’re interested in exploring a sliding-scale option, we encourage you to contact your therapist directly to discuss what may be available. Our goal is to make quality, compassionate care as accessible as possible while continuing to support the clinicians who make this work possible.

HOW LONG DOES EACH THERAPY SESSION TAKE?

Sessions at As You Are Counseling Services are typically 53–60 minutes long. During your first session, your therapist will complete an intake assessment, explore what brought you to therapy, and work with you to create goals that will guide your treatment.

After that initial session, therapy becomes more focused on your personal growth — exploring patterns, building coping skills, and deepening insight as you move toward your goals. Each session is designed to meet you where you are and to evolve with your needs over time.

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

Clients may cancel or reschedule appointments with at least 24 hours’ notice without penalty. When an appointment is canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice, the client is responsible for the full cost of the session. The same policy applies to no call, no show appointments. In the event of a no call, no show, the client is responsible for the full cost of the session.

Psychiatry no-show or late cancellation fees of $250 for intake appointments and $140 or $220 (depending on scheduled appointment) for follow-ups; payment must be made before scheduling additional appointments. After three occurrences, ongoing services may be discontinued.

We do understand that emergencies arise and unexpected circumstances can occur. In such cases, exceptions to this policy may be considered at the discretion of the provider.

WHAT POPULATION DO YOU SERVE?

We provide therapy across the entire lifespan, from early childhood through older adulthood. Our clinicians work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families, supporting individuals at every stage of life and across a wide range of lived experiences. We are committed to creating a space that is inclusive, affirming, and responsive to the unique identities and backgrounds each person brings into the room.

We serve individuals of all races, ethnicities, cultures, religions, genders, sexual orientations, and family structures. We also work with neurodivergent individuals, those navigating disabilities or chronic health conditions, and individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Our team recognizes that each person’s experience is shaped by both personal and systemic factors, and we approach care with cultural humility, curiosity, and respect.

Whether someone is navigating early developmental concerns, identity exploration, relationship challenges, trauma, grief, major life transitions, or simply seeking greater self-understanding, we meet each person where they are. Our goal is to provide thoughtful, individualized care that builds on existing strengths while supporting growth, healing, and long-term well-being.

Please contact your provider to verify how your plan compensates you for psychotherapy services. Clients are responsible for verifying insurance benefits with their carrier. Thank you.
